In Boca Grande, Fla., James Labinski directs the tennis program at “the premier tennis facility on the island, and one of the best in southwest Florida.”
The Boca Grande Club is the centerpiece of a private, gated community of luxury condominium and “village home” residences on the southwest coast of Florida, between Sarasota and Fort Meyers.
The community has a rental program and a full-time real estate office on the premises. The club offers “social memberships” to residents of Boca Grande and the adjacent, off-island region.
The Boca Grande Club tennis facility is undergoing a $185,000 renovation this summer. All of the fencing is being replaced, the two hard courts are being converted to Har-Tru and new lights are being installed on courts one and two.
The facility features eight superbly maintained Har-Tru courts with a state-of-the-art underground irrigation system. Two of the courts are lighted for night play. One of the courts is an exhibition court, with permanent and temporary seating to accommodate 250 spectators.
As director of tennis, James oversees the tennis facility (the courts, pro shop and small staff). He teaches and/or organizes adult and junior clinics, private and group lessons, a match-finding service, weekly men’s, women’s and mixed doubles play, an annual pro exhibition series that raises money for charity, and other special events.
Tennis instruction includes group and private lessons, clinics for tots, beginners and advanced juniors, and walk-in adult clinics, including advanced men’s and women’s workouts. Specific days of the week are designated for weekly men’s, women’s and mixed doubles. Women’s 3.0 and 3.5 teams practice twice a week and hold weekly matches.
The club’s pro shop carries many lines of men’s and women’s tennis clothing, beach and casual wear, as well as Dunlop racquets, and offers restringing and regripping services.
The Center Court Café is adjacent to the pro shop.
Other facilities include a fitness center with a certified fitness trainer on staff, and three pools, one with the very popular Tiki Bar and a beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, the club offers access to a long stretch of the best beach on this island paradise.
The Boca Grande Club also features a clubhouse and restaurant, with exceptionally fine dining and reception/banquet capabilities. Visit us at www.bocagrandeclub.com.

There’s more than meets the eye at Fairview Swim and Tennis Club in Charlottesville, Va.
Although it’s not a huge facility, “Fairview is a family-oriented establishment with a great neighborhood atmosphere,” according to James Labinski, head professional.
“Fairview is most noted for its intense and highly successful swim program,” this USPTA pro says. “But despite the modest (tennis) facilities, hundreds of juniors have learned the sport at the Fairview Club. Some learn the basics and become recreational players. Many end up competing on the high school and local tournament level. And a few have gone on to play at the collegiate level.”
James spearheads a junior program (tots, beginners and junior team) with more than 110 participants annually. He also organizes a Men’s Night, Women’s Night and Mixed Doubles Night, as well as some special events and club tournaments, and teaches group and private lessons. In addition, the club offers racquet restringing and regripping.
James, who is in his 13th season as the tennis professional at Fairview Swim and Tennis Club, directs a staff of six instructors.
Fairview has four hard courts with lights, as well as swimming pools, a clubhouse and snack bar. Visit us at http://avenue.org/fairview.
